PHYLLIS CAIRNS
A second-generation San Franciscan, Phyllis has been active in various publication efforts since 1974, after raising three children. She was managing editor of the American Sociological Review during its three-year tenure at Stanford University before the journal moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She joined Hoover Institution Press at Stanford University and spent the next seven years as the Press’s publications manager with responsibility for all aspects of its annual publication program, which included editing, design supervision, and production of 20-25 new titles. When her husband retired, Phyllis started her own publications business, working from her home office until her retirement. Clients included Santa Clara University Ethics Center, Epicenter Press, and several other local publishers. Since then, she has kept busy with free-lance editing and proofreading projects. Phyllis earned an A.A. from De Anza Community College in 1970 and an M.A. in history from Santa Clara University in 1973. Her main interests are reading, baseball, and volunteering in the library at her Los Altos retirement community.
