Last October I got to speak with employees of Chicago-based UCAN, a wonderful organization that provides a range of services to help youth and families find healing amid trauma. Shayd (pronounced “Shade”) had a challenging childhood, to say the least. By the time he was 21 years old, he had already spent a total of eight years in Wisconsin Juvenile Corrections. And as he moved into adulthood, he began making decisions that could have damaged his young life beyond repair—had it not been for Orion Family Services.

Last fall, CHHSM’s inaugural Nollau Institute class began a yearlong process of formation. The 18-member class has explored the relationship between spirituality and vocation through intensive study, personalized training, special retreats, site visits, online discussions and peer mentoring. The result: A group of equipped and engaged leaders who are bound together in a community of practice.
