The digital age is exciting, and even though mobile computing is more popular than ever, many of us are still forced to spend the day at a desk, sitting at a workstation. This reality of our time can bring with it some unfortunate side effects.
As a worker in this day and age, I myself have suffered over the years, with a sore back, neck, and wrists. After reading some recent articles from The NYTimes Magazine and Cracked.com, I decided to try something I've been thinking about for a while… I bought an exercise ball.
For a few days now, I have been using this ball in place of a chair. The idea is that since there is no back, and the surface is slightly unstable, my body has to use energy throughout the day to maintain balance. This keeps me from being overly static during the day, and will theoretically also help my posture and strengthen the core muscles used to keep me upright.
Nothing will replace just taking a break and doing some exercise, but hopefully this will be better for my body than just sitting.
