Veteran Film Critic Robert Butler Joins Online Magazine
June 9, 2011
Robert ButlerVeteran film critic Robert Butler has joined Senior Correspondent, Signal Hill's new online publication driven entirely by the stories of older adults. Butler, formerly of the Kansas City Star, will write a weekly column for the groundbreaking media venture.
Butler’s 41-year run with the Star came to an end earlier this year, prompting an outpouring of support from a loyal fan base that extended far beyond Kansas City and included venerable film critic Roger Ebert.
Butler has an interesting take on his fan following.
“After 40 years you’re going to have fans whether you’re good, bad or indifferent,” says Butler. “For lots of people I’ve been part of the morning paper for their entire lives."
Senior Correspondent readers were introduced to Butler’s plain-spoken, high-energy writing style in his May 27 column, “One Reason Why Today’s Movies (Mostly) Suck.”
A bit caustic, maybe, but don’t be fooled — Butler is more cinephile than cynic.
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve been absolutely in love with movies,” he says. “The ritual, the dark auditorium, the eager audience.”
His passion for movies started early. As a child, the prospect of going to the movie theater made him sick with excitement — literally.
“Now I only throw up after certain romantic comedies," he says.
Butler's column will appear in the Arts section of Senior Correspondent’s home page at www.seniorcorrespondent.com. Read his latest column here.
